About James Island

As is common in the Lowcountry, James Island isn’t out in the ocean but borders sounds and rivers that would make it inaccessible without crossing water. The community, which joined together in places to form its own town in the past few years, sits southwest of Charleston proper as a bedroom village. James Island touts a population of more than 10,000, and it’s traversed by numerous thoroughfares. But the town saw its access jump immeasurably in the 1990s with completion of the James Island Connector tying together Folly Road and peninsula Charleston. The roundish village spans from the edge of Charleston on the north to Folly Beach on the south. At its eastern extreme, the island stands a couple of miles from Sullivan’s Island and borders partially submerged Morris Island Lighthouse. Other James Island attractions include the S.C. Marine Resources Center and Charleston Municipal Golf Course.

The area is home to young couples, medical students, educated, old school, upwardly mobile. Homes include secluded waterside mini-mansions, cozy neighborhoods and a variety of designs and value prices.

James Island, South Carolina offers an incredible place to reside for those who are drawn to the water. Like much of Charleston SC, James Island is surrounded by creeks, harbors, barrier islands and beaches. The area is well-known for its scenic view neighborhoods, new developments and close proximity to downtown historic Charleston and also to Folly Beach, SC.

James Island includes areas accentuated by public boat landings, year round fishing, playgrounds, eclectic dining and antique shopping. Residents of James Island love the affordability that the real estate offers with the lower population density and less traffic congestion of other areas of Charleston SC. Towering 100-year-old live oak trees greet the residents of James Island.
